Through the generosity of Alumni and Supporters, we are now able to offer numerous
Scholarships and Awards to deserving students in the Department of Geography and
Environmental Resources. The SIU Foundation oversees these important donations to our
department. Indeed, each year we now
recognize outstanding majors; some have taken one or two courses, others have proven
themselves over many semesters. |

In 1984, Dr. Dave
Christensen retired from SIUC after teaching for decades about
the need for a sustainable balance between what the Earth offers
and demands put on the Earth by humans. With this award, Dr.
Christensen hopes to encourage Geography students to focus on
this critical relationship between the Earth and people.
Students must gather and analyze data or analyze and critique
some program or strategy, at a local, medium or even a global
scale, that looks toward achievement of a sustainable balance
between the human family and the Earth.
TO APPLY:
Students must be a Major (undergraduate or graduate student)
in Geography and Environmental Resources.
Individuals or small group should submit a brief
1-page proposal to their instructor that describes their project
and poster:
- research focus
- link to sustainability and scale (noted above)
- objectives
- methodology
Finished projects will be judged prior to the annual spring
"Poster Session" by a three-person departmental committee.

Founded in 1928, GTU is an international honor society in Geography. To date, more than 53,000 geographers have been inducted into the 220 chapters of GTU. The Purposes of GTU are:
- To further professional interest in Geography by affording a common organization for those interested in the field.
- To strengthen student and professional training through academic experiences in addition to those of the classroom and laboratory.
- To advance the status of Geography as a cultural and practical discipline for study and investigation.
- To encourage student research of high quality, and to promote an outlet for publication.
- To create and administer funds for furthering graduate study and/or research in the field of Geography.
Membership is earned through superior scholarship; it is an honor, and a professional distinction. Academic standards are a must to gain entry:
- 3.0 GPA or better for all course work in last 60 hours, and
- 3.0 GPA or greater in at least nine (9) hours of Geography courses.

After years of inactivity, the Gamma Theta Upsilon chapter at SIUC was honored to initiate 19 new members on March 1, 2005. These students come from the Department of Geography and Environmental Resources undergraduate and graduate programs as well as from the Environmental Resources and Policy Ph.D. program.

Established in 1973, the Priscilla Anne Moulton Memorial Award acknowledges an Outstanding Senior as well as Outstanding Students each year. Priscilla Moulton, who was herself an outstanding major, died in an automobile accident in 1971. Priscilla's parents and friends, including Geography faculty, established a fund in her honor to defray the costs of research for graduate students, and to provide for recognition of undergraduate students.
