SIUC's Department of Geography and Environmental Resources focuses on environmental management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty expertise is in water resources, land use, environmental sustainability, and geospatial techniques. Field work, use of computers, and internships are prominent components of the integrated environmental problem-solving approach in both our under-graduate and graduate programs.
Christopher Peters
Student
REACH Award Winner
Undergraduate Geography and Environmental Resources major Christopher Peters was granted a Research-Enriched Academic Challenge (REACH) award for his project "Analysis of Paleoflood Impacts Along the Mississippi River Using Dendrochronology." REACH is a competitive-based award program for undergraduates conducting research, scholarly, or creative projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Dr. Matthew Therrell will serve as Chris' mentor. Chris will travel to Big Oak Tree State Park in Missouri to take core samples of different trees. Through his investigation of the samples he hopes to find evidence of floods on the Mississippi prior to the introduction of river gaging stations and written flood records.

Green Roof Installation: Geography's Weather Station Receives New Home
The first green roof on the SIUC campus and region was installed recently with help from faculty and students from several departments and colleges. Walkways made of recycled glass fall between native vegetation planted to reduce water runoff and reduce heating and cooling costs on the Agriculture Building. The installation of Geography's weather station will provide an ideal educational and research tool for our students and faculty. See the "Up On The Roof" @ SIUC" video.
